"Also, for a bloke who is supposed to be instinctive and creative, why did he kick every restart (and there were many) to exactly the same place?"

That was pissing me off as well, didn't even give the a chance to compete.

VdM basically went through the whole team in one try and through 4 ib his 2nd try... and yes Smith was brushed off... no mention of none of the other players who missed the tackles.. no mention of our scrum half being sold a dunny for their 2nd try or Curry missing a tackle... that's his job?? You seem to forget Smith cross field kick for Mallins try... no problem you not liking him I'm same with Ford but he's very easy to dig out when others should be taking as much of the can and more so...

Smith was also an embarrassment against Scotland. A game where he was similarly ineffective in attack and similarly rag-dolled by the big Saffa cunt. And Scotland are no France.

BJB... the speed of the French at the breakdown was breath taking... blink and bang... I was trying to think of another team that could have lived with that... I can't it... it was quite brilliant.... and as you say Mr S.Edwards is probably the instrument in all this...

Re: The Official 2023 6 Nations Rugby Thread
The breakdown was an area of the game we were great at not so long ago Itoje, Curry, Lawes and Underhill were immense a couple of seasons ago... we need them back fit... but the French were on a different level the were queued up waiting for the tackle then they were in disrupting slowing down and turning over.. I assume that's down to Edwards ... why the hell isn't he an England defensive coach 🤔

Surf... if the support is there then he does not get frogmarched (no pun intended) back over the line... that's just basics... as said any fly half in history would have struggled in what was going on in front of him on Saturday... he's an easy scapegoat,,, get Ford in on Saturday and if you have a pack going backwards then he'll struggle...

For at least two of their tries the French walked straight through Smith like he wasn't there.

Bearing in mind the score, I'd suggest his carries were fruitless as well, but, as I said, I'm more concerned about his defence.

Re: The Official 2023 6 Nations Rugby Thread
Surf... Smith was third for completed tackles last Saturday with 10... only Ludham (11) and Dombrandt (13) had more. So Smith had more completed tackles than the whole of the front row and our locks... he was also 2nd for most carries (10) behind Steward (15).

As zeb said... you could have had Barry John behind that pack going backwards ontop of JVP's snail like service and you will struggle at no 10... when Mitchell came on we had quick ball and that was probably the best period of the game we had.... I watch Marcus Smith a lot (being a Quins fan) and he is a proper player... especially with a dominant front foot pack... he is not the problem at the moment.

I think the kicking thing is still England's default tactic as they play a territorial game rather than a posession one. Marxus Smith wasn't helped by England being excruciatingly slow getting ball to him both recycling the ball from contact and JVP dithering.
I read that the English pack was actually heavier than the French one but the difference in athleticism was stark and the back row were overhelmed by their French counterparts being quicker at everything.
This goes back to Eddie Jones' obsession with winning the "am-wrestle". Lose that and we have nothing to fall back on. Scotland can get away with just about competing up-front as their back line is creative, quick thinking and actually look like they are on the same page. The English backs haven't been like that for years.

Re: The Official 2023 6 Nations Rugby Thread
Smith doesn't have the physical attributes to be the way forward. His complete ineptitude in attack on Saturday could perhaps be put down to a bad day at the office, but his non-existent defence was almost embarrassing.

Also, for a bloke who is supposed to be instinctive and creative, why did he kick every restart (and there were many) to exactly the same place?

I like Genge, but he is there as prop, if he fails at that, then he needs to go, I don't care what he does around the field.

Re: The Official 2023 6 Nations Rugby Thread
Council… I like Genge think he is a proper player but he the whole pack have been found out this 6N (and v South Africa in the Autumn)… I can’t imagine Probyn, Leonard, White, Sheridan and Marler getting rag dolled like the front row has been… when they got over the ball no one budged them off…. I mean that’s just basic front row work.. they are more concerned now with Sinkler and Genge playing almost as backs… lets get back to fucking basics… securing ball for one.

Genge and Sinckler simply aren't good enough. That Cole and Vunipola are still in the squad and not retired speaks volumes.

Ben Curry isn't a patch on his brother who we miss the most, Itoje is a shell of the player he was from playing to much rugby as well.

I fear we'll go for damage limitations and play Farrell yet again back at flyhalf instead of building for the future like Woodward did after throwing Wilkinson in for the 76-0 tanking but putting faith in him.

Still scratching my head 3 days later... I think this Saturday will tell us a lot more about this current England team... you get occasional one off's ... if it happens again then ... well?? Deep down I don't think this is a bad squad... some tweaks are needed... scrum half is a big one for me JVP is just too predictable and his service is just too slow... is Mitchell the answer... probably not... but Harry Randall might be who's been ripping up the prem recently... ok he's no Dupont ... but then who is?? There's enough flair with Smith and Arundel who have it in them to be at the next level... my main worry what I saw against France and v South Africa as that our forwards could not match the physical side of the game... I never thought I would ever say that... but surely that's an easier fix than most things. Anyway roll on Saturday v the Masterful Micks...

That England defeat has been in in the offing for a couple of years. Borthwick has been thrown a massive hospital pass.

The problems are immense and I doubt they can be fixed within a year or two.

Ireland should be winning it, with the set up they've got between clubs and national side. It's all set up to benefit the national team.

Never been past the QF before, so hopefully they don't choke, would be good to see them win it.

Big pressure on Ireland to win the World Cup this Autumn.

They can’t keep flattering to deceive when it comes to the big one.

They will never have a better chance.

The RFU's hatred of League is the reason we have lost out on Andy Farrell and Shaun Edwards.

That is where the blame should lie.

Job done against the Scots.

Expecting a big reaction from England next week. Probably a 50 50 call.
